About DeVOTE
DeVOTE is a research project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) running from January 2021 to December 2025. The project is hosted by the Department of Government at the University of Vienna, a vibrant political science department dedicated to excellence in research and teaching. A research team led by the Principal Investigator Assoc. Prof. Carolina Plescia aims to provide first-time evidence on what ‘voting’ means for ordinary citizens.
Looking at what voting means for citizens in a variety of countries promises to provide a ground-breaking understanding of citizen-conceptualizations of representation and the psychology of voting that can challenge conventional wisdom about participation and voting as well as lead to practical implications for how elections are run and administered.

The Meaning of Voting
DeVOTE is an ERC Starting Grant project running from January 2021 to December 2025. A research team led by Assoc.-Prof. Carolina Plescia develops and applies a new interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approach to study what ‘voting’ means for ordinary citizens.
The DeVOTE project team includes the Principal Investigator, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates and a research administrator. In addition, the project will be served by a high-level Advisory Board composed of experts of the topics and countries covered by DeVOTE.
The project will be served by an international Advisory Board composed of experts of the topics and countries covered by DeVOTE. The Advisory Board will support the project over the years and provide advice on recent developments of DeVOTE research material and activities. Occasionally, members will meet on-site in Vienna to attend group workshops and hold presentations about their work in the framework of the DeVOTE webinar series.
